How does therapy work?
Therapy is a collaborative process, so we’ll work together to explore and understand your issues more clearly. It will help you to connect with and express your emotions and open up new insights and perspectives that you may not have considered. This in turn will enable you to make changes in your life.
Do you offer an initial session?
Yes, we’ll arrange an initial session, which is an opportunity for us to meet and for you to have a space to talk about the issues that have brought you to therapy. I’ll ask you about your life and your relationships, so I can begin to understand you, how you view yourself and the world around you. This will help us to decide if therapy is the right path for you and how we might work together to help you with your problems.
Can I talk to you before deciding to have an initial session?
Yes, I offer a free 10-15 minute phone call, which we’ll arrange, so you can get a better sense of whether my way of working is what you’re looking for and I can explain how I think this will be helpful for you. You can also ask me any questions you may have at this stage.
When do therapy sessions take place?
We’ll meet on the same day at the same time each week, as agreed, so this becomes a regular appointment in both our minds.
Do you offer fortnightly sessions?
No, I don’t offer fortnightly sessions. Therapy is most effective on a weekly basis, as our initial task is to build our therapeutic relationship. Weekly sessions will allow us to gain some momentum and we’ll be able to work on the issues you’re bringing, much more quickly and effectively.
Do you offer strategies?
This depends what you mean by strategies. I don’t offer anything that you can Google. So I won’t be giving you advice or advising you to try specific techniques but what I do offer, is a space for you to understand why you’re experiencing a specific symptom and together we’ll work to understand it and to help you gain new perspectives.
How long do sessions last?
Sessions last 50 minutes.
How many sessions will I need?
This is something we can discuss in the initial session and will be particular to you and your issues. Some people may want to come for a short period of time and other people want to come on an open-ended basis and will want to work on their issues for up to a year or more.
